Wyoming PBS documentary highlights the working dog
Hardest-working employee on your ranch: the stock dog
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Oldie but a goodie. This 2019 Wyoming PBS special highlights just how important the working stock dog is to ranchers.
Herding dogs like border collies and heelers are invaluable to working cowboys. One dog does the work of two or three riders. Zigging and zagging, this way and that, these herding dogs keep sheep and cattle bunched and moving toward the objective. Many are highly trained and/or work instinctively with little direction.
Guard dogs are also invaluable. Many a Basque sheepherder has learned: no dogs, no sheep. In open-range, public grazing situations, predators like coyotes and wolves can decimate sheep herds. Flock tenders like the Great Pyrenees, Akbash, Anatolian Shepherd, and others, are worth their weight in gold as livestock guardians.
