Teton County treasurer recognized for outstanding budget process

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Teton County Treasurer’s Office was awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the presentation of FY22’s budget. It’s the 5th year the county has received the distinction and Teton is the only county in the Wyoming to be so honored.

“The receipt of this award shows Teton County’s commitment to excellence in financial reporting and responsibility,” said Teton County treasurer Katie Smits. “This award demonstrates significant evidence of our county using best practices in budgeting.”

The budget document is reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and by outside reviewers with experience in public-sector budgeting. A Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is only given if the document receives a ‘proficient’ or ‘outstanding’ rating based on nationally recognized guidelines for how well the budget served policy documents, financial plans, operational guides, and communications devices.

“A lot of time and effort goes into creating this document,” Smits said. “When people have questions about revenues, expenses, or want more in-depth knowledge about the budget, I always lead them to this document.”

The GFOA, based in Chicago, is a major professional association providing top quality publications, training programs, services and products designed to enhance the skills and performances of those responsible for government finance policy and management.

“They have many ‘best practices’ that are used by Teton County as a guideline for policies and procedures,” Smits said.

The GFOA says that award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments in the country.
