Wyoming lawmakers aim to prevent boys from competing against girls in sports

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. —

Senate File 51 (Fairness in Women’s Sports Act) would maintain traditional gender classifications between boys and girls high school and collegiate sports. The Bill is sponsored by Senator Wendy Shuler [R-Uinta County], with several co-sponsors in the house and senate.

The divisive issue has come to the forefront in some states where some female athletes say competition from transgender athletes and even biological males who simple “identify” with being female are allowed to race, wrestle, and compete against females.

Two young ladies in particular have been vocal in their frustration with losing to faster, stronger men competing in women’s sports.

A Connecticut high school track and field competitor Selina Soule, 16, has filed suit against unfair state laws that allow boys to compete in girls sports. (Alliance Defending Freedom)

A Connecticut high school track and field competitor Selina Soule, 16; and a collegiate sprinter, Chelsea Mitchell, have both come forward at risk of being labeled transphobic.

“Everyone is afraid of retaliation from the media, from the kids around their school, from other athletes, coaches, schools, administrators,” Soule told the Daily Caller recently.

Soule says she and other girls have missed out on qualifying for regionals and state competition, and may lose opportunities at college scholarships because they are losing races to males.

Both have filed lawsuits against laws in Connecticut—one of 17 states that allow transgender high school athletes to compete without restrictions—meaning a male athlete can simply wake up the day of a sporting event and declare himself a girl. They are being represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom.

And persecution from the woke mob is real. USA Today retracted parts of a story it published in May highlighting Mitchell’s challenges. In a piece labeled “opinion” and written by Chelsea herself, the paper later changed the story online with the message: “We regret that hurtful language was used.”

The hurtful language? The word “male,” which Chelsea used to describe athletes with penises that beat her in a race, was deemed hurtful by the paper. Even “biological males” isn’t good enough for the Cancel Culture. They insist on “transgender” or any of the following:

  • Gender Fluidity – A gender fluid person may feel male on some days, female on others, both male and female, or neither. A gender fluid person might also identify as genderqueer.
  • Gender nonconforming  – When a person’s gender expression doesn’t fit inside traditional male or female categories.
  • Gender nonbinary – When a person’s gender identity doesn’t fit inside traditional male or female categories.

Some Wyoming lawmakers are having none of the nonsense when it comes to fair competition in sports.

Parts of the legislation read:

a)  Interscholastic, intercollegiate, intramural or club athletic teams or sports that are sponsored by a public primary or public secondary school, a public institution of higher education or any school or institution whose students or teams compete against a public school or public institution of higher education must be expressly designated as one (1) of the following based on the biological sex at birth of team members:
(i)  Males, men or boys;
(ii)  Females, women or girls; or
(iii)  Coed or mixed, including both males and females.

(b)  Athletic teams or sports designated for females, women or girls shall not be open to students of the male sex.

The legislature convenes on February 14 in Cheyenne for a month-long budget session. Because it is a budget session, non-budget items like Senate File 51 will need a two-thirds majority vote for introduction.
