JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — A local man was killed while skiing in Grand Teton National Park on Sunday.
Park rangers and Teton County Search and Rescue responded to a callout of a skier who had taken a fall in Apocalypse Couloir. A climber in Death Canyon reported witnessing an individual fall in the steep couloir and then appear to be unresponsive.
Radcliff Spencer, 27, of Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene after resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful due to the nature of injuries sustained. Spencer’s remains were flown from the backcountry and transferred to the Teton County Coroner. The four remaining members of Spencer’s party were transported out of the canyon via helicopter.
Rad Spencer was born in Baltimore, raised in Atlanta, as the oldest of five brothers and sisters. Spencer graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.B.A. in Real Estate in 2017, and immediately relocated to Jackson Hole full-time.
Spencer was an avid climber, biker, skier, and general outdoorsman. He was an active member of Fresh Life Church in Wilson. He was also an assistant coach for the Men’s High School Lacrosse Team.
Friends and family have established a dedicated email account where folks in the community can share their “Rad” stories. These will be compiled and shared with his family.
A memorial service is being planned.
