Center for the Arts to host world-renowned sculpture artist this summer

Famed 'Stickwork' artist will create first-time JH work with and for the community

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Internationally-acclaimed American sculpture artist Patrick Dougherty is the visiting artist at Center for the Arts this coming August. The Center will be the site of one of his monumental site-specific installations from his famed “Stickwork” series.

Dougherty’s sculptures magically transform humble materials by using only locally sourced sticks, saplings, and branches to speak to the creativity inspired by nature.

Each of Dougherty’s works are unique to the place in which they reside. This will be the first of his works in Teton County and will undoubtedly take inspiration from our landscape and community. These sculptures are designed to withstand the natural effects of weather and have a lifespan of anywhere between three and five years.

“We are so fortunate to host Patrick Dougherty this summer at The Center. It truly is a communitywide collaboration as his process requires local participation from volunteers of all ages and abilities,” said Oona Doherty, creative initiatives director for The Center. “This is a rare opportunity to work alongside a master artist during his three-week residency and play a vital role in creating the final sculpture.”

Community collaboration is integral to his process. The custom sculpture Dougherty will create in The Center Park will require a dedicated crew of local volunteers working with Dougherty over the course of three weeks.

Center for the Arts is partnering with two local nonprofit organizations to ensure that the artwork reaches a broad cross-section of the Jackson Hole community. Jackson Hole Public Art will play a critical role as project advisor, and Art Association of Jackson Hole will offer educational activities for youth and adults.

There are numerous ways to get involved with the project and to work side-by-side with Dougherty throughout the month of August.
