Sgt. Stanyon hangs up the badge and gun

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Todd, we hardly knew ya! Teton County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Todd Stanyon retired yesterday. Local law enforcement just won’t be the same without him.

Stanyon called it a “bittersweet day” as he hung up the badge and gun Monday. He did, however, reflect on a long career in law enforcement that began in Florida.

“I was lucky enough to have essentially two careers—15 years at Miami Township Police and 17 years at the Teton County Sheriff’s Office. Had some great role models along the way and made a lot of great friends,” Stanyon said.

What police see and experience day-to-day brings them to the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. All too often their interaction with the public is not on a positive or encouraging note, and just to be able to keep that in perspective and not let it affect one’s personal life is a challenge. Stanyon credited his coworkers for making life doable.

“The only thing that makes this career humanly doable is the amazing people you get to work with every day that have your back. People that become more like family than coworkers,” he said. “Thank you to all of those who helped me along the way and continue to help me today and beyond.”

Stanyon had words of encouragement for fellow officers working toward their retirement day.

“To all my friends still in the game, please be careful and take good care of each other. It has been an absolute honor to serve with you,” Stanyon said.

We are going to miss you, Todd. Your service is much appreciated. Enjoy civilian life.
