Chamber flips, Old West Days parade back on
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — After pressure from the community and backlash to a breaking story appearing in Jackson Hole Press, the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce has reversed its decision to cancel the Old West Days Parade. It will be back for at least another year.
Citing entries are still needed to put on a worthwhile event, the Chamber is soliciting anyone who would like to be involved in the traditionally western parade event during Old West Days.
“We made the original decision to find an alternative to the parade that still celebrated our western heritage because the parade was in decline for decades and Memorial weekend is now a busy time of year,” said Vicky Garnick, an OWD’s committee member and owner of the JH Playhouse. “We recognized this was hard for the community and decided to revisit by encouraging those who wanted to participate to get in touch.”
Word has been spreading as the Chamber is looking to boost the current 20 committed participants to something more like at least 30.
Chamber CEO Anna Olson acknowledged public outcry showed her the parade portion of Memorial Day weekend was still important to many.
“During the past 10 days we have seen some sparks of community support, so in ‘Ride for the Brand’ spirit let’s ignite those sparks and be ready for others…we just need a few more entries that I feel confident will occur,” Olson said.
Those wishing to participate should call the Chamber at 733-3316 as soon as possible.
