JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — A great horned owl is the latest patient at Teton Raptor Center. The male was found in Casper entangled in baling twine and hanging from his right wing unable to free himself. It’s unknown how long the bird was dangling but staff suspect that given the trauma to his right shoulder, he was hanging like that for at least 8 hours.
Luckily, x-rays revealed no fractures or dislocations and the owl is recovering in the ICU on a course of anti-inflammatory pain medication. This owl is getting cold laser therapy once daily to promote healing and minimize swelling.
The most recent x-ray is encouraging as it shows “excellent symmetry in his shoulders, an important thing to look for in trauma cases such as this,” according to TRC.
