JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — It was hot yesterday in the Cowboy State. And the day before and the day before that. Gonna be hot today. And tomorrow.
How hot? Wyoming is obliterating longstanding records. And that’s saying something for a state that can swing from an all-time low of -66 (Yellowstone on February 9, 1933) to a record high of 114 (July 12, 1900 in Basin)
Yesterday, dozens of records fell.
Start with ‘America’s Little Icebox’ Big Piney. The tiny burg is aptly nicknamed for cold air settling there and creating frigid conditions all winter. But Big Piney has bucked the trend for the past two days, posting highs of 90 and 91, respectively.
Sheridan was among several Wyoming communities to see triple-digits. A 107-degree day there was a record not just for June 15, but for any calendar day. Ever. Thermopolis was 104. Both Sheridan and Thermop had previous highs of 98 for June 15. Worland was 106, breaking a three-decades old record.
And how about Buffalo? It’s never been warmer than 85 on any given June 15 in that town’s history. Yesterday, Buffalo reached a sweltering 104 degrees.
State capital Cheyenne broke a record high that stood for 133 years.
Casper, Cody, Douglas, Lander, Laramie, Rawlins, Riverton, Rock Springs all set new record highs.
A record appears to have been set here in Jackson as well as temps soared to 88. The previous high for June 15 was 82. Jackson’s all-time high was set on July 20, 1934 with a day that topped 101. Is this the summer that record falls?
