Classical Academy student spells her way to state

JHCA's 7th grader Claire Harris wins 7th annual spelling bee

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — It was a familiar face at the top of the podium for Jackson Hole Classical Academy’s 7th annual Academy Spelling Bee held Thursday. Claire Harris bested seven other competitors to be crowned champion for the second straight year.

Students in grades 1-8 competed in their own classroom spelling bees over the last few weeks, sending eight final contestants to the schoolwide Academy Bee on January 27.

In addition to a taller mic stand, Claire Harris is going to need a bigger trophy case. The 7th grader won the annual spelling bee at JH Classical Academy for the second consecutive year. (JHCA)

The 2022 Academy Bee contestants were:

  • 1st – Lexie Perez
  • 2nd – Sally Keenan
  • 3rd – Evelyn Shumaker
  • 4th – Travers McGaugh
  • 5th – Honor Reichel
  • 6th – Liam Kantor
  • 7th – Claire Harris
  • 8th – Winston Ochs

In the second-to-last round, it was down to Honor Reichel, Winston Ochs, and Claire Harris. Harris finished first in that ninth round, and was able to spell correctly the word “f-r-a-c-t-i-o-u-s” in the 10th round for the overall win.

Claire Harris will go on to compete in the Wyoming State Spelling Bee. From there, finalists are awarded cash prizes and the opportunity to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.
