Colorado smokers looking to avoid high taxes are buying in Wyoming

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — With taxes on cigarettes more than doubling in Colorado, many in the Front Range and in other border towns are making ‘carton runs’ into Wyoming for a cheaper option.

The influx of business for Wyoming retailers is certainly welcome, but has prompted some to limit how many cigs can be purchased at any one time to prevent a black-market market.

Just how much is being saved by Coloradans? With a tax increase from 84 cents to $1.94 per pack, smokers can save some 20 bucks a carton by making the trip to Wyoming.

The Colorado Sun is reporting some in Colorado have even organized buying groups or parties to rotate who makes the buying trip each week or month. The Denver area might be a haul, but those in Fort Collins are certainly within driving distance of Wyoming to stock up on smokes.
