Kettle up: Bell ringers start today for Salvation Army

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Today begins the Salvation Army Red Kettle fundraiser, running through Christmas Eve.

Volunteers are still very much welcomed. Each Friday and Saturday bell ringers will be at Albertsons, Smith’s, TJ Maxx, Ace Hardware and the town square. Each volunteer sign-up is an hour long. Bells are ringing from 10am to 6pm.

The tradition began in the 1890s with Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee’s desire to help the needy in the San Francisco area. Today, the little red kettle can be found all across the world in Korea, Japan, Chile and many European countries.

That spare change, the dollar bills, and the larger notes go into a fund administrated by a local board of the Salvation Army. The board then distributes the money, much of it through Community Resource Center and the Good Samaritan Mission.
