May another record-breaking month in Yellowstone
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — It’s official, the tally at Yellowstone gates for May is another record.
The nation’s oldest national park hosted 483,159 recreation visits in May 2021. That’s an 11% increase from May 2019 when 434,385 trips were registered. Last month’s totals were the most people to visit the park in any May on record.
May 2020 is generally discarded in terms of comparison as the park was closed from May 1 through May 18. When it was opened to the public, only two of the five entrances were opened for the remainder of the month, and many travelers were still exercising caution about getting out.
