Pioneer photographer William Henry Jackson showcased tonight
Historian and author Bob Blair will be the featured guest
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Pioneer photographer William Henry Jackson will be highlighted tonight in a special presentation by the Jackson Hole Historical Society & Museum.
Historian and author Bob Blair will be the featured guest as he will lead a 20-minute presentation, followed by a Q&A led by local historian, professor emerita, and JHHSM board member, Sherry L. Smith.
Bob Blair compiled, edited, and annotated the 2005 Museum of New Mexico Press edition of William Henry Jackson’s memoir William Henry Jackson’s The Pioneer Photographer. He also researched, wrote, and re-photographed elements of the museum’s current exhibit “William Henry Jackson: Pioneer Photographer Works from the Tetons & Yellowstone.
“William Henry Jackson was hired as a photographer to document the Hayden Geological Surveys of 1871 and 1872, but the impact of these early photos went far beyond simple documentation,” shares the museum’s executive director Morgan Jaouen. “The images helped to support the Act of Congress declaring Yellowstone the first national park. This exhibit and program is one of many activities connected to the 150th anniversary of Yellowstone National Park and its complex history.”
The current exhibit features reprints of Jackson’s earliest photos of Yellowstone and the Tetons taken during the Hayden Expeditions of 1871 and 1872. It was developed in collaboration with Scotts Bluff National Monument and National Park Service museum management and supported by research and photography by Bob Blair.
