Roadside fire north of town extinguished quickly

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Quick-thinking tourists sacrificed their cooler ice and water Friday to put out a brush fire started along Highway 89 brush fire near the south boundary of Grand Teton National Park just north of Jackson.

County and federal firefighters responded to multiple 911 calls about the blaze. When interagency wildland fire resources arrived on scene there were already several passersby engaged on the fire, helping to knock it down with what they had on hand—namely, water and ice.

Firefighters extinguished the fire. From information gathered at the scene, it appears to have been caused by a vehicle traveling northbound, throwing sparks along the shoulder of the road.

The Refuge 1 Fire is considered out. It was limited to one-tenth of an acre.
