Town enclosure wins two design awards

CLB Architects-designed pavilion began as a public art installation in Jackson

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Town Enclosure, an art pavilion designed for JH Public Art by CLB Architects, received two regional honors: the 2021 Jacques Benedict Award from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) Rocky Mountain Chapter, and an Honor Award at the 2021 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Western Mountain Region Design Awards program.

CLB Architects collected both awards this fall, adding to the recognition the project has already received since it was first unveiled in Jackson in 2018.

Town Enclosure was born from a collaboration between JH Public Art, the Center for the Art’s 2018 Creative-in-Residence program, and CLB Architects. The sculptural pavilion functions as a flexible community and art space to be used in a variety of ways—both formal and spontaneous, and always open to the public.

Town Enclosure was relocated from the Center for the Arts in Jackson, Wyoming in 2020 to its new home at the Story Mill Community Park in Bozeman, Montana. During its Jackson residency, the sculpture won several national awards and was featured in numerous publications.

In addition to JH Public Art and CLB Architects, others involved with the project included the Center for the Arts, MountainSpaces, KWC, Premiere Powder Coating, KL&A Inc, Nelson Engineering, Dembergh Construction, and Two Oceans Builders.

The Jacques Benedict Award, previously known as the Robert & Judi Newman Awards, is presented by the ICAA in celebration of excellence in classical and traditional design in the Rocky Mountain region. The ICAA Rocky Mountain Chapter Awards, held this year in Denver, Colorado, are named in honor of Jacques Benedict (1879-1947), the esteemed early 20th Century Denver architect and graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, who produced nearly 80 Beaux Arts style buildings in the Rocky Mountain region.

At the September 30 awards ceremony, Town Enclosure was awarded the Jacques Benedict Award in Architecture: Addition/Renovation/Folly.

At this year’s AIA Western Mountain Region Awards, Town Enclosure received an Honor Award in the Built Category. This program recognizes excellence in design, planning, and construction, as well as significant achievements by AIA WMR members and allies who share the common cause of creating an excellent built environment.
