JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — The only area drive-in and one of the few remaining in all the United States just blew over.
The outdoor screen at Spud Drive-In blew over in last night’s high winds, some topping out in excess of 50 mph. The 70-year-old structure completely toppled over in the night, the giant screen smashing to the ground.
“We are beyond thankful for each and every one of you,” owners of the icon wrote on social media. “There is no question that our hearts are heavy right now with the loss of our structure. With that being said, get ready because we will be rebuilding. We promise once we are ready to open the gates, we will be throwing the BIGGEST party for all of you guys!”
The 1950s-style drive-in opened in 1953. It is listed on the U.S National Register of Historic Places. The Spud has been a mainstay in Teton Valley ever since, located on Highway 33 between Victor and Driggs.
Owners say insurance should cover the replacement. Finding time and someone to actually do the work will be the challenge as the business hopes to be open by June.
Powers Excavating will be onsite later this week for the massive cleanup. Until then, the Spud is asking any volunteers to come and help sort through the wreckage for anything salvageable.
“Come and help. Dress warm. If you have hand tools bring them. Let the rebuilding begin,” the Spud declared on Facebook.
