Wolf research continues for Game & Fish
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Wyoming Game and Fish has been busy capturing and collaring wolves, hoping to learn more about population metrics and better inform the state on future wildlife management policies.
WGFD large carnivore biologist Ken Mills has been working with a professional wildlife capture crew, collaring wolves in northwest Wyoming. The goal is to have at least one or two collared wolves in each pack so reproduction and recruitment of pups can be better determined. The data will also help biologists get a good sense of the wolf population at any given time.
Better data allows the department a clearer picture and helps inform wildlife managers regarding a stable wolf population, particularly in the Wolf Trophy Game Management Area.
The end of 2021 marked the 20th consecutive year Wyoming has exceeded wolf-recovery criteria established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the state.
