JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Skinny Skis 22nd Annual Avalanche Awareness Night will take place this Thursday, December 2, from 6:30–8:45pm. The event will be virtual.
The keynote speaker will be Doug Chabot, director of the Bozeman, Montana-based Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center. Chabot will present “Making tracks and avoiding death: Differing avalanche strategies for The Northern Rockies and Afghanistan.”
Chabot will look at the differences of risk (recreation vs. living in avalanche terrain) and danger for vastly different populations. He will discuss how we combat deaths through education, research, and forecasts in both places using different objectives to reach the same goal of saving lives.
Additionally, the event will feature talks from the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (BTAC), Teton Country Search and Rescue, Pass Ambassador Jay Pistono, and Wyoming Department of Transportation. The BTAC and the American Avalanche Institute will discuss the early season snowpack. Avy Night promises to be an informative, educational, and engaging evening that will prepare everyone for the upcoming season.
Avy Night promotes safety among backcountry travelers, builds community and mutual respect among backcountry enthusiasts, and raises funds for the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center and Teton County Search and Rescue.
