RoboBroncs win Chairman’s award in Colo., robot Pico loses arm
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — The #3374 drive team (Walter, Henry, Carter, Carson, and Harry) and the pit crew (Stella, Brynne, Grainger, Ben and Austin) had their work cut out for them. But once they got robot Pico fine-tuned, the Jackson RoboBroncs pushed their way up the standings in Colorado.
After starting 18th overall Friday, Pico came out hot on Saturday, improving to 9th place in just 4 matches—4th place if you go by offensive power rankings.
June and the rest of the scout team (Gabe, Parker, Peyton, Analy, Liseli, Blake, Estephanie, William, Li, and Owen) worked hard to set up an alliance but the RoboBroncs were ultimate folded into the No. 4 Alliance to begin finals play.
Pico started strong in the quarterfinals but a catastrophic game 2 saw the Broncs robot lose an arm—sheered completely off.
The fabrication team worked feverishly to get Pico back in the game. The Jackson 3374 crew was back in the action with a rebuilt bot to play the tie breaker, which ended in a tie! It was penalty points that determined that tie and the Pico was off to the semifinals.
That was where Pico met the end of his run. Up against the two top bots in the tournament, Pico lost both contests and was finished in Denver.
#3374 gets important win
The good news is, Stella and Brynne won the judges over with their Chairman’s Award presentation and Jackson won.
“The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST,” said team leader Gary Duquette. “It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders.”

The team returned home with some good ideas on ways to improve Pico and started right away with improving the hooks (so hopefully no more arm rippage) and improving the pickup of the balls.
Now it’s off to Salt Lake for the Utah Regionals.
