Field is set for 2022 political races

Town and county campaigns heating up

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — The filing deadline to run for office in Wyoming ended yesterday with a few latecomers to various races.

The race for county commissioner became a little more crowded with a field of two Democrats and four Republicans running for a trio of available seats.

Mark Barron-R did not file. That leaves Mark Newcomb-D and Luther Propst-D seeking reelection as incumbents. They will be joined by Alex Muromcew, Peter Long, Kasey Mateosky, and Tom Segerstrom—all filing as Republicans.

Town Council seats coming up are Arne Jorgensen and Jonathan Schechter. Challengers include Devon Veihmen, who made an unsuccessful run in 2020, as well as newcomers Elliott R. Alston, Joel Smith, David Scheurn, and Kat Rueckert.

The county assessor’s race will be interesting only because so many homeowners don’t like what they saw when they opened their latest property tax bill. Incumbent Mel Shinkle-D will be challenged by Zane Aukee-D.

Brian Hultman is gunning for Anne Comeaux Sutton’s Clark of District Court position.

All other races in Teton County are incumbents running unopposed including Mo Murphy-R for County Clerk, Brent Blue-D for Coroner, Erin Weisman-D for County Attorney, Matt Carr-D for Sheriff, and Katie Smits-R for County Treasurer.

State races

At the state level, all Teton County lawmakers are facing challenges.

Incumbent State Senator Mike Gierau-D will attempt to hold off Steve Duerr-R for SD17. Sen Dan Dockstader is running for Secretary of State. If he wins, a Republican will be appointed to fill his S16 seat.

The House race is crowded with three in the field having eyes on the HD23 seat after Andy Schwartz-D announced he would not seek reelection. Paul Vogulheim-R, Ryan Sedgeley-D and Elizabeth Storer-D are all in the race.

Democrat Mike Yin’s H16 is up. Yin will rerun and receive a challenge Republican Jim McCollum.

Andrew Byron-R appears to have an open road to HD22 as Jim Roscoe-I did not file at deadline, though he could declare later with a write-in campaign.
