Community Safety Network hosts domestic violence event in response to Gabby’s murder

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — In response to the headline-grabbing case of Gabby Petito, who was found dead in Spread Creek, Community Safety Network (CSN) is offering a virtual event: How to talk about domestic violence 101.

“With the tragic murder of Gabby Petito and the media’s thorough coverage of the case, our country is engaging in extensive conversations about domestic violence and abusive relationships. While awareness is essential to prevention, it is important that we both honor lives lost and understand the ways in which domestic violence affects a person far beyond what we might immediately notice or understand,” said Adrian Croke, director of education and prevention for CSN.

Community Safety Network will offer tips on how to have an informed conversation about domestic violence, from understanding the role of power and control to disrupting victim blaming. This virtual event will be the first in a series of events throughout October. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

All are welcome at this event. It will be both a survivor-centered and learning-focused environment.

Andy Cavallaro, Community Safety Network’s executive director, added “Gabby Petito was murdered in Jackson Hole. I want the community to understand that Jackson Hole is not insulated from these types of violent crimes. Here at CSN, we see the violence that survivors experience on a daily basis and we are here to tell you it’s real, it’s happening all around you, and it is not okay.”

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention classifies domestic and intimate partner violence as “a serious, preventable public health problem that affects millions of Americans” and describes it as “physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, or psychological harm by a current or former partner or spouse.” Violence is not just physical: half of all people will experience some form of psychological harm from an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Join Community Safety Network on the evening of October 7, from 5:30 to 7:00pm.
