Father, son become lost in ‘Black Hole’
Search and Rescue found the pair and heli'd them out
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Teton County Search and Rescue was alerted to a pair of missing skiers on Teton Pass around 6pm Sunday night.
A father and son had left at 8am and were supposed to return by 2pm when they missed their exit time. The pair called home—in Driggs, Idaho—to say they had gotten lost while skiing the back slopes of the south side of Teton Pass. The wife then alerted authorities which dispatched TCSAR. The missing skiers’ vehicle was subsequently located at the top of the Pass.
TCSAR responded with a team in the RZR, two ski teams, and the helicopter—which was aided by extra sunshine due to daylight saving time. The teams headed into the Mosquito Creek area, known as the “Black Hole” due to its tendency to confuse and disorient backcountry users over the years.
As the helicopter searched the area, the skiers were found uninjured at 6:55pm. The ship landed and volunteers loaded the two skiers inside. The father and son were then flown to the TCSAR hangar where they were reunited with family.
