JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — As bears begin awakening in the area, many fans of 399 are keeping a careful watch on when the grand ol’ dame may reemerge from her den with four cubs in tow. That day came today when the famed griz was spotted for the first time in 2022 with all four cubs looking healthy.
Team 399, a social media bear watchgroup first reported the sighting on Facebook. Grizzly 399 posted this afternoon a short 7-second video showing Griz 399 and cubs traipsing across the snow after waking from winter hibernation.
Griz 399 is now 26 years old. At some point this summer, the famed sow will likely turn her cubs loose to fend for themselves.
The bear family was targeted for capture last fall after roaming through Jackson residential areas for the second straight season. Three of 399s cubs were captured last November, two were fitted with radio tracking collars.
