JH Historical Society & Museum secures federal grant for new campus
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Jackson Hole Historical Society & Museum has big plans that just received a big boost. The Museum announced it has secured a grant totaling $750,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in order to build a campus on the historic Van Vleck block.
The award was one of only 23 grants in the Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant category given out across the country. JHHSM was also the only Wyoming applicant to receive funds in this grant cycle.
“The NEH grant competition is fiercely competitive and proposals go through rigorous evaluation. To receive an NEH grant, particularly of this size, is the apex of national academic achievement and a huge validation of our new History Museum,” said Sherry Smith a JHHSM board member, previous NEH grant reviewer, and University Distinguished Professor of History Emerita at Southern Methodist University.
As a challenge grant, the NEH award requires JHHSM to meet a 4:1 ratio or $3 million match of the award in non-federal funds.
“The support for the project is now local, regional, and national,” said board president Jim Hunt. “We are grateful for the tremendous philanthropic and grant support received already. We will look to our community to meet this grant challenge in the coming months.”
