JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — A man who went missing while hiking in the Gannett Peak area was found dead early Monday morning.
Thor Hallingbye, 41, went missing in Sublette County over the weekend. His body was located on Gannett Peak, within Fremont County, early Monday afternoon.
The 41-year-old Cheyenne man had been missing since Saturday after becoming separated from the climbing party he was with. The party had entered the wilderness from Green River Lakes Trailhead.
The Sublette County Sheriff began search efforts on Sunday and later located the missing man Monday afternoon at an elevation of 12,900 feet on the north east face of Gannett Peak.
The deceased was recovered and airlifted to the Lander Airport late Monday afternoon.
The death is being investigated in conjunction with the Fremont and Sublette County Sheriff as well as the Fremont County Coroner.
“At this time the death appears to be a tragic climbing accident,” said Fremont County Sheriff Ryan Lee.
