Relocated griz comes back, euthanized

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — A grizzly bear thought to be a descendant of famed griz 399 is dead after authorities caught it again brazenly seeking and obtaining unnatural food rewards in residences north of Jackson.

The bear in question was listed by Wyoming Game and Fish as a subadult male grizzly, likely around 2 years old. It had been caught, collared, and relocated 19 miles north of Moran to Sheffield Creek back on May 6. Less than two weeks later it was back in residential areas of Grand Teton National Park getting into garbage and other attractants.

According to followers of the Team 399 Facebook page, it is believed by many that the bear is a descendant of griz 610, an offspring of 399. Observers noticed the bear hanging around a female generally known as Fritter (Blondie’s daughter).

A resident of Solitude last saw the bear on May 20 and reported it. Solitude is a subdivision north of town on the radar as a place wildlife has received food rewards illegally.

Game and Fish says the bear was put down May 22.

A report obtained by Jackson Hole Press shows the subadult male had been previously captured and relocated. (WGFD)
