Rep. Cheney blasts Biden, Trump for failed policies leading to Russian invasion of Ukraine

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — U.S. Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has been outspoken in the days following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, criticizing both sitting president Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump for failed policies and inaction leading to a heightened threat of world peace.

“Vladimir Putin has launched an unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine. America and our allies must immediately impose the full set of crippling sanctions on Russia and its leaders. Putin’s decision to return to Soviet-style aggression against Russia’s neighbors cannot be tolerated by the free world,” Cheney said. “There is no excuse for praising or appeasing Putin. If America fails to lead decisively, the vacuum will be filled by the kind of brutal tyranny we are seeing on display in Ukraine today.”

Cheney, who broke ranks with Trump when she openly rebuked his challenge that he did not lose reelection to Biden, put part of the blame on the former president for withholding military aid to Ukraine and for downplaying the importance of NATO.

“President Trump spent a large part of his presidency attacking NATO, saying that NATO was obsolete, and attacking our allies,” Cheney said. “We are certainly seeing today how crucially important NATO is, how crucially important our allies are.”

When asked on Face The Nation about an isolationism movement that says, “I don’t care what happens in Ukraine, it doesn’t affect me and we should not send U.S. troops to fight over there,” Cheney was clear.

“We’ve been down that road before. Isolationism has always and will always be wrong and dangerous. America cannot maintain our own security and freedom if we this we can simply withdraw from the world and not lead,” she said. “If America withdraws, the void is filled with the kind of brutality we are seeing in Ukraine today.

Cheney also criticized Biden’s “war on fossil fuels” as helping Putin build his war chest.

“We should unleash our domestic energy resources,” Cheney said. “We should stop importing Russian oil and block Russia’s access to revenue from their energy exports.”
