School district going for broke on housing
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Teton County School District officials recently outlined an ambitious housing plan for the future; one that hopes to build some 332 units for upwards of $200 million.
Independent housing consultant Christine Walker presented plans for building at three potential school-owned sites; the largest, a 212-unit apartment complex with an additional 20 townhomes on a 5-acre parcel adjacent to Jackson Elementary School to the south.
The district is also considering a home ownership development near Munger Mountain Elementary which could include up to 48 single family homes.
Finally, a rent-own flex condominium project at Jackson Hole Middle School would include three structures with 24 units per building.
At their regular meeting February 9, the board of trustees agreed to prioritizes the Middle School development as being the best place to start.
“It’s a great location. Town Council seemed to like it,” board chair Keith Gingery said.
Trustee Kate Mead agreed, adding, “Let’s start with one building and go from there.”
TCSD#1 estimated current demand for housing to be somewhere in the 170-250-unit range. If those, demand for rentals is 65-100. There are nearly 3,000 students attending public school in Teton County. That number has grown steadily in the past few years.
