JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Former U.S. Senator from Wyoming Alan K. Simpson will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden in a ceremony scheduled for July 7.
Simpson grew up in Cody and later served in the U.S. Senate for 18 years (1979–1997). Each president since President John Kennedy began the tradition in 1963 has bestowed the medal on prominent citizens who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
Simpson will be Biden’s first nominee for the award to date.
Cowboy State Daily caught up with Sen. Simpson to get his thoughts about the honor. It is a great write up about a Wyoming legend.
