Snow King pushes back opening day

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Snow King Mountain Resort is eyeing a December 11 opening day, at least for the Magic Carpet to start rolling. That’s pushed back from what the resort was hoping would be all systems go this week.

Snow is in the forecast this week but will it be enough to get the King covered? It’s doubtful.

Colder overnight temps this week will help with snowmaking down low but flurries Wednesday don’t look like near enough to help any of the area resorts.

“Our snowmaking crew has been stumped at night trying to make snow at marginal temperatures, but it is finally turning to winter in Jackson Hole,” the resort said in a statement released today. “On Saturday December 11, we will open the Magic Carpet for lessons at the base of the mountain, and anticipate opening the Cougar lift soon thereafter.”

Steady snow is in the long-range outlook for nearly every day next week. That could be a huge help.

Haven’t seen Snow King lately. You won’t believe the improvements:

  • A new high speed 8 passenger gondola to the summit
  • A new beginner teaching zone at the summit with two magic carpets
  • The new Sunnyside lift on the back of the mountain
  • Over 100 acres of new lift accessible ski terrain
  • A new easy way down cat track from the summit of the mountain
  • New snowmaking on the summit and backside of the mountain
  • A new snowmaking pump house at the base
  • A new location for the base of the gondola
  • The steepest zipline in North America, which we will open in the summer
