Cruel summer: local businesses at a loss for labor
Restaurants close, stores reduce hours, nobody to fill jobs
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Staffing shortages continue to plague local businesses. Some restaurants and retailers reacted earlier in the summer by closing down or reducing hours. Now, those that had been operating close to normal are also cutting back.
The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar just announced it would scale back hours of operation at its attached giftshop. The store will move to a 4-day work week beginning this week, open only Sunday through Wednesday. The bar itself has already gone dark on Sunday nights with a DJ this summer due to staffing.
Starbucks on the town square is reportedly shuttering at the end of the month. Again, hiring and maintaining staff is the reason for the iconic coffee shop’s decision.
And the Bird 86’d its legendary Sunday brunch simply to guard from employee burnout at this point.
Earlier in the summer, restaurants Local and Trio announced they were closing every Saturday—the busiest night of the week for most restaurants. A Chamber of Commerce survey of some 250 local businesses in June found just about half of them said staffing issues would cause major changes in the way they would operate this summer.
