Jackson Hole Mountain Resort promotes Matt Clos to director

Longtime JHMR employee replaces veteran Jim Kercher at Mountain Sports School

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. —  Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) announced today that it has named Matt Clos as the new director of the Mountain Sports School (MSS). The promotion places Clos, the 19-year JHMR team member, as the new leader of the MSS and all its facets, including summer activities, the JHMR’s adult and children’s ski and snowboard school, and the backcountry guiding program.

“It is an honor and a privilege to lead the Jackson Hole Mountain Sports School. The legacy of directors is inspiring, to say the least,” Clos said.

Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist Pepi Stiegler founded the MSS and ran the program from 1965 to 1994. Legendary big mountain skier Doug Coombs worked as an instructor and guide and started the Resort’s Steep and Deep camps. The resort is currently expanding its backcountry guiding program with additional guided tours into JHMR’s famed backcountry.

Clos served as the senior business manager at JHMR for the past 10 years. He first joined the resort’s MSS sales department in 2003 and replaces veteran Jim Kercher, who retired in May after leading the school from 1994 to 1998, then again from 2015 to 2022.

“I want to thank Matt for all his contributions during my tenure,” said Jim Kercher. “I am confident that he will continue to lead the MSS into a productive and dynamic future. Please join me in congratulating Matt as he takes the reins of the most prestigious school in the country.”

The Jackson Hole MSS is regarded as one of the best schools in the snow sports industry. MSS winter staff comprises 560 instructors with 485 members certified by PSIA-AASI including 44 examiners. Clos is a certified PSIA instructor and brings years of experience and strong leadership to the program.

“I am extremely grateful to be working with the best team in the industry,” Clos reflected. “Our talented and dedicated team are what make the Jackson Hole Mountain Sports School so special.”
